Save the most “real estate” on your resume for the experiences and skills that best align with the role you’re applying for.

Let’s be real, a hiring manager is busy any day of the workweek. When they’re trying to fill an open role, they’re even busier than usual. Their schedules are packed to the brim with browsing resumes, setting up phone interviews, and keeping up with their own deadlines and work expectations.

Keeping that in mind, my first rule of thumb is to keep the length of the resume to 1 page. This makes it easier for a screener or hiring manager to print, review, markup, and share with other members of the hiring panel.

Since we’re keeping it short, it is crucial to focus on the work experiences that are relevant to the role (or roles) that you are interested in. Repeat after me: I do NOT need to include my entire job history.

TLDR:

On your resume, edit yourself and share only the details that are going to make you stand out as the candidate who’s best qualified for this specific role.
